Phone Policy
Our general camp rules strongly discourage bringing phones. This is because young people often risk losing, damaging, or misusing their phones during camp. Additionally, phones can be distracting and may detract from the overall camp experience. For this reason, it’s best to leave them at home.
If young people choose to bring their phones despite our recommendations, they will be required to hand them in to leaders upon arrival. They will then be stored in a secure location.
Phones will only be returned during designated times daily, such as free time during the day, or when deemed appropriate by the volunteers. Phones must be used within the common space and are never permitted within dorms; this is to respect the privacy of all. Usage is also not allowed during mealtimes and activities. They must be returned immediately upon request.
Usage is always at the volunteer’s discretion. Behaviour during the event, or at other events, may alter how phone access is permitted or withdrawn.
Young people should not use personal devices to take photos or videos. Regular updates can be found on the parents’ Facebook group. Not everyone may be comfortable being photographed.
When using their phones, they must be using them appropriately and in a way that is not disruptive to others. Any young person who fails to comply with these rules will have their device confiscated for the remainder of the camp.
Communication home should be directed through volunteers. Contacting young people directly can undermine the processes in place. Volunteers are unable to resolve issues they are unaware of, so young people should be encouraged to speak to them directly. Volunteers can facilitate messages and calls home when required.
1st Bournville Scout Group are not responsible for phones that are lost or damaged during camp. They are not covered by Scout insurance. We are unable to share WiFi credentials with young people on camp.
Sometimes we may ask in advance whether a young person is taking a phone. It is important this information is provided truthfully, and parents should update volunteers if this changes.
We hope camps provide an opportunity for young people to disconnect from their devices and connect with others over the event.
